You can do hard things: Lessons from a Pilates class.

This year I had a new opportunity to teach Pilates to local High School students as part of their Pastoral care subject. I almost said no, I was rather nervous about standing in front of a large group of teenagers, teaching them about mindful movement.

After some self reflection, I figured it was time to step up & do as I preach. That we can do hard things! After all, it's not in my character to shy away from a challenge.

We've all experienced the curve balls & challenges that life can throw our way, from stressful workdays to unexpected hurdles. While we often focus on the physical benefits of exercise, Pilates goes beyond just building strength and flexibility—it also helps you develop a powerful mind-body connection that can make a big difference in how you cope with life’s ups and downs. Teenagers of today are facing a very different reality to the one I grew up in & I decided that if I could impart anything, it would be that I believe those kids are called, capable, worthy & born for great things. Pilates was going to be my tool to teach them that.

It was a rocky start, building trust with one another but the first term went by and I was invited back again for another term! Word had got out that Pilates is awesome & the group almost doubled!

Today, we wrapped up another term and were all a little sad it was over. The students have learnt how to breathe through & experience discomfort, yet remain focused. Their mental toughness will help them deal with stress, setbacks & challenges with greater ease.

And they taught me that with patience, determination & grace for each other, we are all capable of doing the hard things. I am grateful to the group of students for sticking with me, embracing me & engaging in something new. They won my heart & I'm forever grateful for this opportunity!

There is gold, beauty & growth on the other side of your 'hard'. Every challenge only brings you closer to your strongest, most resilient self.
